Fireside chat: Is Strategy for Wimps?
Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth
Mike Tyson may not have put it very eloquently however the implication is clear – there is no point in careful planning. This may be true but it is dangerous to confuse pointless detailed planning with having an effective strategy. If you don’t know what success looks like – you won’t achieve it.
The word ‘strategy’ is much maligned, conjuring up memories of sterile Away Days spent on futile exercises such as SWOT analyses and the application of Porter’s Five Forces interrupted by constructing rafts from oilcans and rope! As a result, many businesses lack a clear, measurable objective which can unify the troops and provide a framework to answer strategy’s two key questions: “where are we going to play” and “how are we going to win”.
If you are a senior-level decision maker; investor or entrepreneur looking to extend your knowledge and enrich your network then join this forward thinking group that will give you the edge and inspiration to make your business stand out head and shoulders above the rest.
Topics that will be addressed:
- Do you need a strategy?
- How do you engage your fellow executives and other stakeholders?
- Can you keep it alive and meaningful?
- How do you avoid the risks of failure and exploit the opportunities to shoot the lights out
- Some of the best practices for evaluating market potential and deciding where to deploy resources and capital
- Case studies of companies which have achieved quantum growth
